How do you unwind after a demanding day?

There was a time when my version of unwinding came in a glass. A generous pour of red, a deep exhale, and a convincing little lie: I deserved it, this is helping.
And to be fair—it did… for about 20 minutes.
Then came the sequel nobody asked for: sluggish thoughts, another pour, and another, and a morning that felt like I owed life an apology.
These days, my unwind looks different. And …? ….it actually works!
I walk.
I wander with intention kind of walk.
I grab my dog, step outside, and let the world meet me where I am. With sunshine on my face, or wind messing up my hair, or that random chill that makes you pull your jacket tighter and feel oddly alive – I’ll take it all.
It’s sensory. It’s grounding. It’s like telling my nervous system,
Hey… we survived the day. You can relax now.
I swim.
Swimming is my reset button. Laps back and forth, rhythm steady, thoughts slowly untangling themselves without me forcing anything.
— and jacuzzi,
— and the sauna, where I sit and let the heat do what overthinking never could: soften everything.
That’s the thing I didn’t understand before.
Relaxation isn’t something you pour.
It’s something you practice.
It’s movement.
It’s presence.
It’s choosing something that gives back instead of taking more.
Now when I unwind, I don’t borrow peace from tomorrow.
I build it right here, in the moment.
Plus….
I wake up the next day… not needing to recover from my recovery.
